Wolvaardt century seals series win for South Africa

Laura Wolvaardt produced a record breaking innings and Annerie Dercksen claimed her maiden five wicket haul as South Africa completed an emphatic 3- 0 series victory over Zimbabwe in Bulawayo.

Wolvaardt struck an unbeaten 126 from 59 balls, the highest T20I score by a South African batter, while Karabo Meso marked her opportunity at No. 3 with a career best 50 not out.

South Africa posted 200 for one before dismissing Zimbabwe for 120 to win the third T20I by 80 runs and take an unassailable lead in the five match series.

For Wolvaardt, it was a remarkable response after scores of six and 10 in the opening two matches.

The captain shared a 173 run partnership with Meso, who had not batted in the series before being promoted up the order. Meso showed composure as well as power, reaching her half century for the first time in international cricket.

Wolvaardt reached her fifty from 32 balls before accelerating dramatically. Her century came from 54 deliveries, and she added another 25 runs from the next six balls she faced.

The innings took her level with India's Smriti Mandhana on 18 international hundreds, while she also became the first South African batter to reach 3,000 runs in women's T20Is.

Zimbabwe's bowling offered little respite. They conceded 16 wides and struggled for consistency as Wolvaardt punished anything outside her reach.

South Africa's innings was briefly overshadowed during the chase when Meso was injured while attempting a catch in the eighth over. She was helped from the field and was later confirmed to have suffered a groin strain.

By then, Zimbabwe were already in serious trouble.

They lost three wickets for 25 runs inside five overs before reaching the end of the powerplay at 29 for four. Two more wickets fell in the eighth over, leaving Zimbabwe 35 for six.

Dercksen was at the heart of the collapse.

She removed Kelis Ndhlovu and Beloved Biza in the same over before bowling Loreen Tshuma to claim her third wicket. The fourth came when she dismissed Loryn Phiri, and two balls later Michelle Mavunga was caught in the deep to complete a superb five for 15.

Zimbabwe had briefly threatened to extend their innings through Mavunga and Phiri, who added 51 for the eighth wicket, but Dercksen ended the resistance.

Her figures made her only the third South African woman to take five wickets in a T20I innings, following Sune Luus and Shabnim Ismail.

The result completed a dominant opening three matches for South Africa, with the remaining two games now an opportunity to build further depth and momentum.

At the centre of it all was Wolvaardt, whose extraordinary century provided the headline and whose leadership helped South Africa put the series beyond Zimbabwe's reach.
