South Africa’s golfers made the most of bright conditions on the Scottish links as they enjoyed a strong opening round at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship on Thursday.
Seven South Africans finished within two shots of the joint leaders, Scotland’s Michael Stewart and Australia’s Jack Buchanan, who carded seven under par.
Reigning Investec South African Open champion Casey Jarvis produced the standout round among the South Africans, firing a six under 66 at Carnoustie.
Jarvis finished his round in spectacular fashion, making four consecutive birdies before an eagle on his closing stretch to move firmly into contention.
“Carnoustie is one of my favourite courses in the world. I’ve never played particularly well here in the past, but it has still been a real favourite course of mine because the bunkers are so well placed and the course is always in such fantastic condition,” Jarvis said.
“There are so many things about this course that are tremendous.”
MJ Daffue matched Jarvis with a six under 66 at Kingsbarns, while Hennie du Plessis, Christiaan Burke, Dean Burmester, Brandon Stone and Daniel van Tonder all finished on five under.
Du Plessis was among those to make the most of the favourable conditions at St Andrews.
“When the sun shines at St Andrews you have to take advantage,” he said. “There is always such a nice spirit at this tournament. From the moment you arrive here you see all the old faces that make it feel like such a fun South African week here in Scotland.”
The South Africans will now look to build on their opening rounds as they chase the prestigious title.
Only one South African has previously won the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, with Branden Grace lifting the trophy in 2012.
